East Elementary School is a small elementary school with a long history of commitment to education. Originally called the First Ward School, East Elementary was first built in 1851. In 1881 a new building was established on the school’s current site. Despite fires, wars and economic hardship, this little school has stood the test of time, serving approximately 290 students in grades kindergarten through fifth. Students with boundless creative energy find an outlet by joining one of East Elementary School’s “Destination Imagination” teams. “Destination Imagination” is a nationwide creativity competition that encourages problem-solving and teamwork in gifted students. Just last year, the East Elementary Golden Eagles team became the first team from Mount Vernon to compete at the “Destination Imagination” state competition. Nestled in a sleepy neighborhood off of Gambier road, East Elementary School has always enjoyed the support and enthusiasm of its community members.
